The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
